Type II Diabetes Symptoms – Can You Identify Them?

Diabetes is a sneaky disease. You might have this disease and not even know it. The symptoms often start gradually and progress slowly. If you can learn to recognize the “high blood sugar” signs, you can begin to control diabetes and stop its progression. The signs may include:

  • Excessive thirst sometimes combined with continuous dry mouth
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger – especially strong cravings for carbohydrates and sugar
  • Unexplained weight gain, can’t lose weight, or sometimes unexplained weight loss
  • Constant fatigue – always tired, especially after a meal (a baked potato can put you to sleep quickly)
  • In women, vaginal yeast or fungal infections
  • Erectile dysfunction in men
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Tingling or burning pain in the feet, legs, and hands
  • Unusual cramping in legs and feet
  • Unexplained areas of darkened skin, called acanthosis nigricans, which may be a sign of insulin resistance
  • Gum infections
  • Boils
  • “Tight skin” feeling, especially on legs
  • Scaly feet
  • Uneasy or interrupted sleep
  • Short-term memory impairment

The diagnosis of diabetes is very troubling and scary, but the control of this disease is mostly up to you, with the help of your physician. The biggest thing you can do to control your disease is to control your diet and learn to monitor your blood sugar. You can live a relatively normal, healthy life even if you have Type II Diabetes.

Special-Education-World-Diabetes-DayThe United Nations Proclaimed Today World Diabetes Day, and November is National Diabetes Month.

It’s time to share our knowledge about Diabetes with others in the hopes that some undiagnosed diabetics will learn to read their symptoms and get help to solve their problems.  Wear blue clothes today in observance of World Diabetes Day.

Having diabetes isn’t easy.  Many of us struggle to keep our blood sugar in control.  We struggle with what to eat, what to avoid, and how to make ourselves exercise on a regular basis.  Small achievements, like having a good blood sugar reading, or losing 1/2 a pound, or having a day where you eat totally low carb are cause for celebration.

Low Carb Diets Are A Gift To Diabetics

Low Carb Eating Can Be A Big Cooking Extravaganza Or Really Easy

You can also eat out on a low carb diet, just eliminate all bread, rice, noodles, french fries…you know the plan.  Fast food restaurants can still be a place to get a fast, low carb meal.  All of them will give you hamburgers without the bun, either wrapped in lettuce as Hardees does, or in a small bowl, as McDonald’s does.  A side salad can complete your meal.  It’s cheap and fast and still low carb.

Skin Conditions with Diabetes

hivesJust Because You Have Diabetes, It Doesn’t Mean You Will Suffer From Skin Conditions.

However, research tells us that up to one-third of diabetics do have some kind of skin condition.  Many of these conditions are definitely related to the diagnosis of diabetes and some are just coincidental.  In either case skin conditions should be addressed quickly.  The danger to diabetics is infections that do not heal quickly.  These may lead to serious problems, and in some cases have led to amputation.

High Blood Sugar Makes Infections Harder to Heal

Not only does high blood sugar make infections harder to heal, high blood sugar levels allow fungi and yeast to thrive on the surface of the body and then infections can occur.  One skin infection that many diabetics suffer from is boils.  Boils are definitely a skin condition associated with diabetes.  A boil is a skin infection that starts in a hair follicle or oil gland. At first, the skin turns red in the area of the infection, and a tender lump develops.  After four to seven days, the lump starts turning white as pus collects under the skin.

  • The most common places for boils to appear are on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks. When one forms on the eyelid, it is called a sty.
  • If several boils appear in a group, this is a more serious type of infection called a carbuncle. (Source – Web MD)

Why do I know about this?  When my blood sugar gets out of my preferred ranges, I get boils.  FACT – most doctors are not aware that high blood sugar will cause boils.  Even though I used to go to the doctor for treatment of a boil, not one (and I’ve been to 3 different doctors for boil treatment) ever said anything about watching what I eat, or about high blood sugar, or that this could be connected to my diabetes.  BUT, I never had a boil in my life until I got diabetes.  So, if I get a boil, I know that I have to cut carbs drastically, and then it goes away.

Diabetic Skin Conditions

Diabetes Affects The Skin in Two Main Ways.  Having high blood sugar levels is one way and nerve damage caused by high blood sugar, called neuropathy,  is the other way.  And of course, neuropathy is caused by high blood sugar.  So, high blood sugars are the double, or maybe triple or quadruple whammy for diabetics.  Neuropathy or nerve damage causes numbness in fingers, hands, toes and feet.  Injuries can occur and not be noticed until severe damage has occurred.

Here are the main diabetic skin conditions:

  • Boils and Carbuncles, as previously mentioned
  • Diabetic Cermopathy which appears as scaly patches on the legs [source - American Diabetes Association]
  • Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum (NID) is caused by changing blood flow. It also shows as patchy spots, but they get bigger than diabetic dermopathy, and can become open sores.  Medical treatment is required for these, but remember, low blood sugar will help deter all of these conditions.   • Scleroderma Diabeticorum is thickening skin on the upper back and neck.  [Source - Web MD]  This condition is also managed by controlling your blood sugars.
  • Fungal Infections usually produce itchy rashes in moist areas of your body, such as skin folds.  The rashes can be surrounded by blisters or scales and have a yeasty white film in the folds of the skin.  You need to seek medical treatment for a topical ointment.  Keeping blood sugar down is the best deterrent.
  • Dry Skin is common in diabetics.  Your skin can become flaky, sore and red.  It may crack which would allow germs to enter and cause infections.  Keep your skin well lubricated with hand and body lotions, and use a moisturizing soap such as Dove Bar Soap.
  • Acanthosis Nigricans is velvety dark patches of skin that might appear in skin folds.  Look for it around the neck, armpits, groin, knees, elbows, and hands.  Acanthosis nigricans is related to insulin resistance and often appears before a diabetes diagnosis.  It seems that weight loss is the best treatment, and will help alleviate the condition.
  • Diabetic Blisters are a rare condition where painless blisters develop on the extremities.  These look like burn blisters, and will usually heal themselves in about three weeks.  The treatment, the ONLY KNOW TREATMENT, is to improve and lower blood sugar levels.
  • Diabetic Dermopathy is brown and scaly age spot look-alikes.  These are caused by changes in the small blood vessels that reduce blood supply to your skin.  Other names for this condition are Shin Spots, or Skin Spots.  Again, what’s the treatment?  Lower your blood sugar levels, and keep them there.
  • Skin Tags are small, polyp-like pieces of skin that occur most often on the neck, eyelids and armpits.  Did you have any idea that skin tags could be caused by diabetes?  I didn’t, but I do have some.   It seems that Insulin Resistance, which most Type 2 diabetics have, is linked to skin tags.  It may also indicate abnormal blood fats.  No treatment is necessary, but your doctor can remove them for you if you just can’t stand them anymore.

 Skin Care Tips for Diabetics

My first recommendation:  Keep your blood sugars in control.  Eat low carb to keep your blood sugar count low.

  • Talcum or baby powder is helpful to use in places where skin touches skin.  Example, your groin, or between your toes.
  • Moisturizing lotion applied after each bath while the skin is still damp is useful. Fragrance-free is your best bet.
  • Always keep your skin clean and dry.
  •  If you do have rashes, wash with soap and water,  and keep clean.  See a doctor if it gets worse
  • Check your feet daily.  Many diabetics get into trouble here.  They have neuropathy and can’t feel much, and may miss a cut or corn or a minor problem, and then it turns into a major problem.

Control, Control,Control.

You can guess what I’m going to say.  Managing your diabetes is the best way to avoid the many skin conditions that are caused by high blood sugar.  Watch your diet, exercise regularly, and check your blood often.  If your blood sugar gets over 100 mg/dl do something about it right away.  Don’t wait until the hidden symptoms jump up and meet you head on.

 Here are the steps you must take to regain control of your body and your disease:

Step #1 Measure your blood sugar often

Now that you have received a diagnosis of diabetes, and you are in your physician’s office, get a prescription for a blood meter that measures your blood sugar. You can purchase them without a prescription, but your insurance will not cover the cost unless your doctor has prescribed this tool for you.

These blood meters come with a lancet that contains a very sharp, very small needle that will prick your finger for the drop of blood the meter requires.  Have the doctor or nurse give you instructions for using the meter and the lancet.

Do not be frightened about having to stick your finger to draw a drop of blood – this is the most important procedure you can learn to do if you want to control your diabetes.  It is a MUST, that you test your blood at least four times a day when first beginning to control your diabetes.

Remember I said you were the controller of your diabetes?

This blood meter and the readings it gives you, is the tool that gives you the most important information – your blood sugar numbers.  Without this information, you won’t know what steps to take to reverse your type 2 diabetes.

The information from your blood meter is what you use to determine what is happening to you based upon your very own food choices. You will now be able to decide what food groups to select and which to avoid.

What you are measuring is the amount of glucose (blood sugar) in your blood, especially after meals.  What we want to determine is how much your blood sugar spikes after each meal.  Different foods will have different reactions on your blood sugar.

 What is a normal blood sugar count?

The average blood sugar reading on a non-diabetic is about 83.  Anywhere from the mid 70′s up to 89 is preferable.  If your readings higher than that – you probably have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

The best time to check your blood sugar is the 1st thing in the morning as soon after rising as possible; 2 hours after each meal; and again before retiring for the night.  If your blood sugar is rising to 140 and above after meals, you need to adjust your eating habits.

Step #2 Control your blood sugar with the foods you eat

What foods affect blood sugar the most?

Carbohydrates and sugars will cause the biggest swing in your blood sugar.   Processed carbohydrates, grains, flours, cereals, breads – even whole wheat, cookies, cakes, potatoes, rice and most grains, and last but not least, sugars and anything that ends in “ose” such as sucrose and maltose and most importantly High Fructose Corn Syrup are the big no no’s if you have diabetes.

You have been told that a healthy diet is full of whole grains and lots of fruit.  This is not a healthy diet for diabetics, and will cause your blood sugar to spike significantly.
What foods can I eat that don’t spike my blood sugars?

Protein should be your first choice for every meal.  Start you day by eating proteins; choose eggs, an omelet, or a hard-boiled egg if you are on the run.  Add some meat and some vegetables if you have the time.  Proteins will not cause your blood sugar to rise significantly.  Many diabetics are being told to avoid eating fats.  But fats, good fats are precisely what will not raise your blood sugar at all.

What does that mean to most diabetics?  It means that eating meats and poultry and fish of all types are good food for diabetics and not to be avoided.  Eggs, butter, heavy whipping cream (for coffee) and cheese are OK too.

Green, leafy vegetables and non-starchy vegetables won’t give much of a blood sugar raise, that’s the carbohydrates you should eat.

Berries are the fruits allowed for diabetics, and you must eat those sparingly.  The rest have too much sugar and fructose for you.

What about Fats?

Contrary to popular belief eating fat does not make you fat.  Eating fat does not give you heart disease.  Eating fat does not raise your cholesterol.  In fact, not eating enough fat can make you fat.  Our bodies need fat to survive and to make hormones.  In fact, more than 50% of the dry weight of our brains is fat!

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a diet high in healthy fats proved to be superior to a low-fat diet, both in terms of weight loss and overall health benefits.  And a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association found that an Atkins-style low carbohydrate diet not only caused double the weight loss of the low-fat diet at the end of one year, but that it didn’t adversely affect cholesterol levels.

So go ahead and eat Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, butter, nuts, avocados, olives and seeds like sunflower seeds.  They are all good for you.  Heavy whipping cream has a lower carb count than any other coffee creamer, so feel free to use heavy whipping cream in your morning cup of java.

Here is the list of all the good food that you can eat

Proteins, including all meats, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, or protein whey drinks.

All green leafy vegetables and any of the other vegetables that are not starchy.  Most of the red veggies are OK, just skip the beets.  After all, they make sugar out of beets.  Try to eat a variety of greens and colored vegetables.

Nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and their oils are all good for you.

Berries should be your fruit of choice.  Eat these sparingly.

Beverages that you can drink are water, coffee, tea, and any diet soda that is sweetened with Sweet ‘N Low or Stevia.

 Test two hours after each meal

It takes about 45 minutes to 2 hours for us to digest our foods and for our blood sugar to spike.  If your 2 hour after-meal test remains under 120 or lower, you are good.

Blood sugar ranges from 120 and up are dangerous.  Research shows that nerve and organ damage from diabetes begin when our blood sugar gets over 120.  Remember, we want to keep our blood sugar readings in the range of 75-89.

Test your blood sugar and write it down.  Keep a log of which foods raise your blood sugar up and which foods allow it to remain in the perfect range. Do this 4 -5 times each day, especially 2 hours after eating.

This is how you control your blood sugar.  Don’t eat the foods that cause your blood sugar to soar.  Stick with foods like protein and vegetables that do not raise your blood sugar.

This is what a sample food plan for 1 day looks like

Breakfast
2 eggs, any way and sausage or bacon and some vegetables, coffee with cream

Lunch
1 -2 cups of salad greens with cucumbers, celery, carrots, tomatoes, peppers (any color), mushrooms, green beans, snap peas (the only peas you should eat) and then some protein.  The protein can be meat, chicken, fish and you can add some cheese.

If you are eating out order a salad, or order any sandwich and omit the bread.  Doing fast foot this lunch time?  Hardees’ will turn any sandwich then make into a low carb sandwich by omitting the bun and wrapping it in lettuce leaves, it’s delicious.  Drink water or unsweetened tea with Stevia.  (Truvia or Pruvia).

Dinner
Steak, chicken or fish on the grill and 2 cups of vegetables or 1 cup of salad and 1 cup of veggies.  I love mashed cauliflower, I’ll put that recipe on this blog.   Want a glass of wine with dinner, you can do that, but don’t have three or four glasses, that’s too much.

Step #3 Get up and start moving

Walking is a great way to get moving.  When the weather allows, go for a bike ride, hike the trails, and walk on the beach or at the lake or river.

It turns out that lifting weights is especially good for diabetics.  Weight lifting moves the glucose out of your muscles and lowers your blood sugar.  You don’t have to join a gym, just get some dumbbells and a lifting CD and work out at home.

We have just learned that the best medicine to control diabetes is the right food and exercise.  Add to this the fact that you learned now which foods to eat and which to avoid, you are armed with the knowledge to make miracles happen by reversing your Type 2 diabetes the natural way.

Research on Diabetes

New research on diabetes from the scientific community helps keep me up to date with my disease.  Some of these findings might surprise you.  I hope they motivate you to continue on the path of keeping tight control of your diabetes as it does me.

#1)  Reducing A1c Count Less Than 1 Point Reduces Risk of Dying Within 5 Years by 50 Percent

This great research news reinforces my continuous goal of getting my A1c below 5%.  I have found out that belonging to the 5% Club is a great achievement, but actually getting my A1c to 4.5% is my new goal.  This is the normal A1c for non-diabetics, and I continually strive for normal blood sugar numbers.

This 4.5% A1c reading, along with an average blood sugar reading of around 85 is what I’m striving for.  I haven’t reached those low numbers yet…but my goals are to get there and maintain for the remainder of my life.  2013 will be my year of success as it applies to my A1c and my blood sugar counts.

The subjects in this study were separated into two groups.  Those whose A1c decreased by at least 1% over the 5 year study, and those whose A1c remained stable or increased by at least 1%.  After 5 years only 12% of the well-controlled group while 20% of the poorly controlled group had developed coronary heart disease.  Cardiovascular disease was present in 17% of those in the well-controlled group and 30% of the poorly controlled group.

Keep striving to lower your A1c, your heart and blood vessels will thank you for it, and you’ll have a longer life as a bonus.  From the blog of Diabetes In Control.

#2)  New Study Demonstrates Low Carb Diets Reduce Risk for Heart Disease and Inflammation

This information really isn’t new.  Dr. Atkins, Dr. Bernstein, and Gary Taubes, just to name a few, have known that a Low Carb diet reduces heart disease and inflammation for decades.  But the Medical community has been slow to give up the misinformation that high carb, low fat diets really are bad for you, make you sick, and wreck your metabolism. The good news is that more and more of mainstream physicians are learning all of the benefits of a low carb diet.   I know that the more I can reduce my risk for heart disease and the deadly killer Inflammation, the better off I feel and the longer I’ll live.

Very important information is that weight loss and losing belly fat in particular has the greatest impact on these reductions.

A low carb diet is the fastest, easiest, most fun way to diet.  The benefits are quick fat loss results, results that you can see in a very short period of time.  On a low carb diet such as Atkins, the fat just seems to melt away quickly.  Another benefit is never having that “starving” feeling that goes with a low fat, high carb diet.   Eating low carb, relatively high fat diet is satiating, and leaves you feeling full longer.  Really, you never have to feel hungry on a low carb diet.

Another significant finding is that a low carb diet can reduce and even eliminate Inflammation, which is the true cause of heart disease, NOT high cholesterol, as we have all been erroneously told for many decades.  Results of the study were presented on November 5, 2012 at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.

 

#3)  Medicare to Pay for Obesity Counseling in the Name of Prevention

Unless you are 65 or older, this last bit of information won’t sound important to you.  But it might be the forerunner for insurance companies in the future.  Going on a diet may well be a covered program for the obese.  Since America is the fattest developed nation in the world, this might be a Very Good Thing!

The research went on to say the medicare will begin reimbursing primary care physicians and other qualified practitioners for administering face-to-face behavioral counseling to patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more.  Check your BMI here.  This information is from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) news release Nov. 2012

It’s a month to spread information about Diabetes and what you can do if you are diabetic.

 The Statistics On Diabetes Are Alarming

The bad news about Diabetes is that more and more people are diagnosed with Type II Diabetes each day.

The Good News About Diabetes

The good news about Diabetes is that it is not a death sentence.  You can control your Diabetes, and some people are actually able to reverse most of their Type II Diabetic symptoms.  How can you do that?  It’s easy and it’s hard.

The Best Medicine For Diabetes

The easy part is that Diabetes can be controlled with diet, exercise and medicine.  The hard part is the diet and exercise, and that is all up to you.  Your doctor cannot just give you a pill that cures the disease.  Medicine helps, but the biggest part of the equation is diet and exercise, and that you must do yourself.

If you have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, daily exercise is a MUST DO.  If you don’t exercise now it’s a great time to begin.  Just start walking, it’s easy to do and requires no special equipment.  Some of us join gyms, and get help learning how to lift weights.  Some prefer to work out at home and there are tons of CDs of all types.  You can do cardio, stability ball exercises, weight lifting, walking CDs, dance CDs, Yoga; Pilates…the choices are many.

Diabetics Do BEST On A Low Carb Diet

The new part is learning what to eat, and what NOT to eat.  This is confusing to many people as there are many diet programs to choose from.  There are low-fat diets, low-carb diets, calorie counting diet plans, food combining diets, and clean- eating programs just to name a few.

My diet of choice is low-carb, clean eating.    A low-carb diet eliminates most of the carbohydrates and the truth is carbohydrates greatly affect your blood sugar.  Carbohydrates will cause your blood sugar to rise like nothing else will.  Carbohydrates include all sugars, agave, fructose, and all grains, including whole wheat grains and multi-grains.

This diet program helps me to eliminate all sugars and most grains.  I also eliminate all fruits except for berries, and the occasional apple or pear.  Why eliminate fruits?  Fruits are made up of carbs and sugar.  And over half of that sugar is fructose.  Fructose is especially bad for diabetics.  Sugar is digested and goes to your blood stream.  Fructose, on the other hand, goes directly to your liver where it is turned into adipose tissue (FAT) within 60 minutes…and that’s a fact.  Even if it’s touted as NATURAL, which it is, that doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

It’s Easy And It’s Hard

Controlling my diet and doing exercise also controls my weight.  I’ve already lost 50 pounds, and I am managing my Diabetes, but I also take Metformin, a diabetic medication.  My goal now is to lose another 40 pounds and control my disease with only exercise and diet.  The good news is it can be done.  And, as you already know, it’s easy and it’s hard!

Top 5 Myths About Diabetes

It’s a fact that 25.8 million adults and children in the US have diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association thinks that millions more are going undiagnosed.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is that a diagnosis of Diabetes or Prediabetes doesn’t have to mean that doom and gloom are in your future.   There are many myths about diabetes.  Here are some positive answers to those frightening myths.

Myth #1:  Diabetes Is a Progressive Disease

Once you have it, you can’t control it and you will end up on Insulin.
Diabetes is NOT a progressive disease.  You can learn to manage and control your diabetes yourself.  If you have Type 1 (formerly juvenile-onset) you will have to use Insulin.  Your body doesn’t produce it.  But you can manage  your diabetes with injected insulin, a healthy diet and regular exercise.  On the other hand if you have Type 2 (once called adult-onset) diabetes, your body is still producing Insulin, it just isn’t using it correctly.  This can be controlled with a healthy diet, exercise, regular blood sugar monitoring, and sometimes oral medications.

Myth #2:    I have “Prediabetes”,So I Really Don’t Have To Worry

Having pre-diabetes is actually having diabetes, and without some lifestyle changes, it will progress into the full-blown disease.  Here’s what you need to do.  Change your diet by eliminating most sugar and grains.  Add some exercise to your daily routine.  You can keep diabetes at bay.  But do it now, you’re already in the danger zone if your recent diagnosis was Prediabetes.    Ask your doctor for a prescription for a blood sugar meter and instructions for its use.  Then use it on a regular basis to see if you are eating the right foods.

Myth #3:  Even Though I Have Diabetes, I Can Still Eat Everything I Want, Just In Smaller Quantities

Carbohydrates are what make your blood sugar go up.  Refined sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup are especially dangerous for those with diabetes.   Just because bread is Whole Wheat doesn’t mean it’s good for diabetics.  An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but if you have diabetes, it will most certainly raise your sugar to unwanted levels.  Try to eliminate most grains, pastas, breads, cereals, sugar, and fruits except for berries.  Normal blood sugar counts are from 75-90 between meals and 120 2 hours after a meal.  If your sugar is spiking over 140 after any meal, rethink your food choices.

Myth #4:  Now That I Have Diabetes, I’ll Just Eat What I Want And Take Medicine To Handle The Disease

This is one of the most dangerous myths of all.  The best way to control diabetes is through healthy eating, daily exercise, and regular monitoring of one’s blood sugar.  You have to become intimately involved with all aspects of your disease.  Only you have the power to manage diabetes.

Myth #5:  I Should Check My Blood Sugar When I Get Up And When I Go To Bed

Diabetics who successfully manage their disease check their blood sugar 4-5 times each day:  Upon arising in the AM; 2 hours after breakfast; 2 hours after lunch; 2 hours after dinner; and before retiring for the night.  This is how you learn which foods make your blood sugar go over the accepted levels. Then, adjust your diet and stop eating the foods that spike your blood sugar.   It’s not always easy to do, but give it a good try, you’ll see immediate results.

Remember, it’s all up to you to manage and control your diabetes.  Diet and Exercise are the best medicine for Type 2 Diabetes and can completely reverse and eliminate “Prediabetes” for you when you make some simple changes.

My Diabetes Diet

What Do Diabetics Really Eat?

I’m repeatedly asked, just what can you eat if you eliminate most grains and all sugars?  Here is the food plan for one day of my Diabetes Diet.

BREAKFAST: Around 6:00 AM

Hard-boiled egg, Wasa Bread, Green Tea, delicious!

Other breakfast choices are 1 cup cottage cheese with cinnamon and blueberries or strawberries.  Organic Greek yogurt with Raspberries and Stevia for sweetness.  Hard boiled eggs with the yolks replaced with guacamole or hummus.  Any meat or fish of your choice, actually Wasa with cream cheese and smoked lox is one of my favorites.  Omelets with veggies, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, scallions, onions, the sky is the limit.  Add some sausage or bacon if you want it.  Just be sure you keep your breakfast to about 6 carbs or less.  If you don’t want tea you can have coffee with cream, or just drink water.

SNACK Around 9:00 AM

Celery sticks with Natural Peanut Butter and a piece of String Cheese.  Water to drink.

LUNCH 12:00 PM

 

???????????????????????????????Home-made Chicken soup that was made with carrots, celery, onion, mustard greens, green beans, mushrooms and Brussels sprouts (my least favorite veggie, but you really cannot taste it in the soup and it’s really good for you) and parsley.  No noodles.   I used all chicken legs for this soup and had two legs in my lunch portion.  Unsweetened Iced Tea for a beverage.

Other options for lunch, a big salad filled with meat, veggies and cheese.  Tuna or chicken salad.  Any type of fish, grilled chicken breasts, left-overs from the previous night dinner, eggs, fixed any way you like include egg salad or deviled eggs, these are all  great options.  If  you are craving a sandwich either use lettuce leaves to replace the bread, or take 2 slices of American cheese, put them on a piece of parchment paper and microwave for 1-1/2 minutes.  Do NOT use waxed paper, parchment is the only one that will work and will release the cheese slices.  Now, use the cheese crisps in place of bread.  All sandwiches are delicious made like this, and on a low carb program, they are on the list.

SNACK Around 3:00 PM

Chocolate Protein shake (this is also great for breakfast).  I use EAS or GOLD STANDARD WHEY protein mixes.  I buy the EAS (Vanilla and Chocolate) at Sam’s Club and GOLD STANDATD WHEY Protein Mix is purchased at The Vitamin Shoppe – on-line.  I mix mine with 1 tablespoon of Da Vinci sugar-free, alcohol-free Kahlua and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and 4 ounces of decaf coffee left from my husband’s morning coffee.  Shake or stir, add ice and enjoy this delicious drink.

DINNER 6:00 PM

Pork Piccata, 1 cup broccoli, steamed and 1/2 baked sweet potato with a dab of Sour Cream.  Hot Green tea as a beverage.

As you can see, I’m eating a healthy, low carb, non-processed food diet.  Do I ever slip up?  Yes, sometimes I will eat Popcorn at the Movies.  I play cards and other games and my friends always serve foods that are not on my program, occasionally I’ll take a bite, but I’ve prepared for it by cutting down on all of the other carbs I eat earlier in the day.  And, you know, sometimes a girl’s got to have a piece (or more) of chocolate.  You can do this if it’s only occasionally.  Any diet that’s too strict will be impossible to stick with.  Build in some cheat eats.  I’ve become mindful of everything I eat.  Sometimes I want it, but I say, I want that, but I’ll eat it later.  Then the urge will pass and I do not eat it.  Sometimes it doesn’t work and I eat it anyway.  The important things is, if you do eat it (whatever it is), don’t throw your entire diet away.  Just begin again at your next meal,  you’ll get there!

My Usual Carb Breakdown Looks LikeThis:

  • Breakfast – 6 carbs
  • Lunch – 12 carbs
  • Dinner – 12 carbs

That’s right, only about 30 carbs per day.  Did you know that there is NO DAILY REQUIREMENT for carbs for your body?  If you are following the American Diabetes Association diet, they will suggest that you eat about 100 carbs or more each day.  This will keep you on diabetes medications for the entire time you consume that many carbs.  Lowering your carb ingestion will lower your Blood Sugar counts.  I know because I track my blood sugar and when I eat that many carbs, it soars.  When I reduce my carbs, my blood sugar goes down accordingly.  This is how I got into the 5% club.  I know, it’s hard to give up all the stuff that everyone is snacking on and eating for their meals.  But, when you do, the results are amazing.

How and Why to Measure Your Blood Sugar

Excess blood sugar can cause moderate to severe nerve damage to your body

Diabetes is a very serious disease and without proper control and management excess blood sugar can cause moderate to severe nerve damage to your body.  One of the biggest problems is that the nerve damage is a slow, degenerative process.  Many times you do not know damage is occurring until the damage is permanent and painful. Examples of the nerve damage that can happen when your Blood Sugar is out of control are:

  • Pain, burning, tingling, or loss of feeling in the feet and hands.
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Light-headedness upon standing
  • Problems swallowing and keeping food down
  • Bowel problems
  • Urination problems
  • Bladder and Kidney infections
  • In men, erectile dysfunction; in women, loss of libido
  • Infections that run rampant, that could lead to loss of a limb

You Can Reverse And Prevent Nerve Damage

Are you asking right now, “How do I save myself from nerve damage?”   One of the best ways is to gain tight control of your blood sugar. I’m not saying diet and exercise do not play a very big role, perhaps the biggest.  But without being able to monitor what food does to your blood sugar, you won’t have a clue that the lasagna you had for lunch is causing your blood sugar to spike.   There’s a funny thing about pasta, some diabetics say it doesn’t cause their sugar to spike.  That’s because they tested the usual 2 hours after their meal.  But pasta is tricky and it might take as long as 5 hours to register on your blood glucose meter.  You might not have an increase after dinner, but what about that weird spike at bedtime?  It’s the pasta checking in…just wanting you to know it really is there.

Here Are The Steps To Take To Gain That Tight Control

  • measure your blood sugar 4 – 5 times each day:
  • measure first thing in the morning, as soon as you get up
  • measure 2 hours after every meal
  • measure again prior to turning in for the night

Let Your Meter Be Your Eating Guide

Keep a log of the rise and fall of your blood sugar.  You will probably see that grains and sugars are the worst offenders along with root veggies (read potatoes)  and beans.  Grains includes breads, pastas, rice, oats, barley, rye, quinoa, you get the idea.  Just because bread is labeled “Whole Wheat” doesn’t actually mean that it is healthy for a diabetic. Let your metering device be your guide.   Fruits are another sugar-spiker.  The best fruits for diabetics to eat are berries.  This includes blueberries, strawberries, and my favorite – raspberries.  An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but for diabetics, it might also cause a rapid blood sugar spike, so keep fruits to a minimum.

Many physicians, mine included, will tell you to check your blood sugar upon arising and prior to going to bed.  This leaves you in the position of not knowing which foods you can actually eat and which to avoid.  The truth is, the more you test, the more you know.  Do some experiments. Test your blood sugar and then eat your favorite food.  Test your blood sugar after one hour.  Record the reading.  Test again after 2 hours.  Record the reading.  What is your meter telling you?  At one hour you sugar number may not be too high, but after 2 hours it may be spiking to unknown heights.

Blood Sugars Of 140 And Higher Cause Lasting Organ Damage

This is how you determine which foods you can actually eat and enjoy, knowing your blood sugar won’t be too high.  If your 2 hour reading is over 140, time to rethink what you are eating.   Here’s why. Many studies show that post-meal blood sugars of 140 and higher and fasting blood sugars over 100 cause permanent organ damage and cause diabetes to progress.

Last, A Quick Lesson On Where To Actually Take The Blood Sugar Test

Do you see how the attendant is sticking the side of the ring finger? That’s where you should test also.  People who are not diabetics will try to test your Index finger.  NOT!  It hurts, and many times your index finger is much tougher than the side of the ring finger and it’s hard to get a drop of blood out.   What about using an Alcohol wipe prior to the stick?  NOT! again.  Washing your hands is all you need to do.  Those wipes can cause callouses to form and that makes it even harder to get some blood.  What if the blood doesn’t want to come out?  Are your hands cold?  Try running hot water on your fingers and then try again.  Still nothing?  Swing your arm in a large circle, that may cause the blood to flow to your fingertips.  Still nothing, try the little finger or middle finger of either hand.  Don’t panic, you do have enough blood, remember you just need one small drop.  Now that you have that drop, just touch the tip of the test strip to your finger.  The test strips actually have a sucking action, and they will suck the blood up so it can be checked.  Alternate testing sites would be your arms or legs.  Meters will have a special tip to use on arms and legs.

Nerve Damage Is Scary

This is why it’s so important to keep those sugars in check and under control.  Our very lives may depend on it.
